We started using more video a few months ago.
A very excited colleague sent me the link to Salman Khan’s TED talk last week. We started using video to capture knowledge from SMEs around the business a few months ago.
Now, whenever someone asks a question on our forum we ask them to produce a 15 minute video on the topic once they have found their answers.
These videos are added to a library where other staff can vote and leave comments. If someone believes they can add to it they record a new video and add this to the library.
We also run a ‘mastery’ program for new starters. They have ten high level topics they must cover (they can investigate in any way using the forum, the intranet, existing videos or simply asking colleagues) and for each one they must create a 15 minute video. At the end they will give an hour presentation on all topics to a team of SMEs.
We’ve found that for very little additional time learning has accelerated beyond our expectations. We can confidently deploy new starters within weeks, something that used to take us months.
