Hi
I am looking at updating our current observation form that we use when observe our trainers delivering and would be grateful for any hints/tips/ideas or if you would share what you currently use.
Many Thanks in advance
Neil

Trainer Observations
Observation templates can become pretty complex and end up with the observer spending more time on filling out the form than observing! I tend to use a pland, do, review approach and design my form around that. I find a balance that works quite well is as follows:
– Some ‘tick boxes’ for yes and no issues such as ‘Did they have a defined lesson plan/structure for the training’ … ‘Did they define objectives for the session’ … ‘Did they operate equipment competently and with confidence’. Simple yes no answers with a box to the side to tick if an action is identified.
I include a qualitative statement from the observer on the session to use as feedback
I include an opportunity to note down the trainers response to the observers feedback
If feasible, learner input is good as it gives a balance (you could use course assessment feedback for this)
I include joint agreement on development actions and review timescale.
Hope that helps

Feel free to use our trainer competencies and observation sheet!
Hi Neil.
We have a competency framework for training delivery that we use to recruit, evaluate and develop our trainers – you can download it from our website and you are very welcome to use it in your organisation if it’s helpful. We’ve been working with this system for three or four years and we’ve found it incredibly useful. Also do feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about the form or the framework.
Good luck,
Eleanor.
