Trainer’s Tip: Have To or Want To?


This exercise from Tony Boon helps delegates look at what they want and think about the consequences of their choices.

Get them to split a piece of flipchart paper down the middle, and write "have to” on the left, and "want to" on the right. They will write things like "breathe" and "eat" in the "have to" column.

But, when you debrief, you can basically move everything in the "want to" column. The upshot is that you actually don't HAVE to do anything. Everything is a choice, but you just have to be prepared to accept the consequences of your actions.

For example, if you choose to break the law, you accept the fact that you might get caught and go to jail. Or, if you choose not to sell the products, or answer calls, etc (you tailor this to your particular situation), your team mates might have to take up the slack (and be annoyed with you), and your boss might not be impressed. On the positive side, if you choose to bust a gut to meet your targets and care for your customers, then you will get real job satisfaction and may be able to identify ways to improve the process.

This attitude, while a little controversial, can be very liberating. Just be aware that they might decide to leave the job, and accept the fact that they will not have any income for a while!
