Training Helps Projects Succeed

High profile IT project failures are often the result of training needs not being considered early enough, acording to the British Computer Society (BCS).

Jooli Atkins, chair of the BCS new Information and Technology Training Specialist Group said that trainers were not being involved in projects early enough.

“One reason for this is that IT professionals do not see IT trainers as part of the same profession,” Atkins said.

By setting up the group, Atkins, who has 25 years experience in the IT industry and now runs a training company, Matrix Forty Two, hopes to raise the profile of training to BCS members.

The new group listed the advantages for businesses in recognising the importance of IT training as:

  • IT teams would include trainers in the decision process when introducing new software, and in their project teams.

  • IT trainers would be able to plan their programmes better.

  • The user acceptance process of the IT system would be improved as IT trainers usually have more understanding of the workflow procedures of end users and are the communicators of changes in IT systems.

  • IT trainers would identify any flaws in providing business benefits to implementing the IT new system.

  • Perhaps the most important point in her view was that better integrating IT training into an IT project would speed up the timeframe for implementation of a return on investment of the IT solution.
