3. Association of Learning Providers launches
4. OU students virtually graduate
5. What would you put in Room 101?

Welcome to the 100th issue
This is the 100th issue of LearningWire since we first published it
in January 1998. That first issue went to 50 people; this issue is
going to almost 13,000. First, a huge "Thank You" to you for your
enthusiastic support. You have helped to make TrainingZONE the most
popular and widely accessed professional community for people
involved in training and HR certainly in the UK and in many other
countries around the world. You may not be aware that our other
online communities (at AccountingWEB, BusinessZONE, LawZone,
TravelMole and several other titles) now have 120,000 registered
members creating a huge business marketplace. Your directory entries
and business services will shortly be promoted before this audience
and on several global business portal sites. The networking benefits
to registered TrainingZONE users are expanding each month!

Win a celebratory crate of champagne!
We know that the prime driver for TrainingZONE's growth is word-of-
mouth: it's your recommendations to colleagues and friends which have
created this community. So, here's a special one-off deal: send an
email to [email protected] with the names and email addresses
of 20 people to add to TrainingZONE and we'll send you a bottle of
champagne. They must be valid addresses of new users who have agreed
with you in advance to be included - we will run random checks before
adding names. The person submitting the largest valid list will
receive a crate of champagne. The offer closes on 20 May.

Happy Birthday LearningWire!
As LearningWIRE celebrates its 100th issue this week, we thought
it would be a good time to look back through our news stories to
find out which articles TrainingZONE members have rated as most
important. To find out what fellow TrainingZONE members have

E-learning may ease skills shortage
In last week's wire we reported on the DFEE's report into skills
gap in Britain. The worsening global shortage of IT specialists
has sparked strong growth in the IT certification market, with
e-learning providing an obvious solution to the problem of
providing technical IT training.

Association of Learning Providers launches
An alliance has been formed between training organisations and
providers of vocational training to give them a clear voice with
which to lobby government. The combined membership of the ALP,
which launched at the Training for Britain conference on 13 April,
will constitute a powerful group, as they deliver over 80% of work-
based training in the UK.

Would you trade salary for extra training?
According to a survey 60% of Scots would be willing to accept a lower
salary if they were given greater additional training opportunities.
These findings were announced at the launch by Scottish Enterprise of
the National Training Awards in Scotland.

Online workshops
This week there are not one, but two online workshops to boost your
learning direct from your desk.
The TRAINING NEEDS ANALYSIS workshop will explore problems, pitfalls
and practical solutions to issues in identifying learning needs.
It's on Tuesday at 13:00 BST
The EFFECTIVE MEETING SKILLS workshop is an opportunity to review
your own approach to running meetings and learn some new techniques.
Led by Anne Walker, it will run on Thursday at 16:00 BST

OU students virtually graduate
Open University (OU) students graduating with a Masters in Open
and Distance Education participated in the world's first virtual
awards ceremony on 31 March. Writing in the Independent's Open
Eye supplement, Sir John Daniel, Vice-Chancellor of the Open
University says that as the students had completed their degrees
on-line, it made perfect sense for them to receive their awards
in the same way.

Coping with that dreaded computer illness
We're having to write this story in code! Following last week's
panic attack on computers around the world, many network managers
have quickly installed e-mail filters to search for the dreaded
words and bounce e-mails containing them - so we can't spell them out
in this story! Our workstations were affected very early causing
some systems to crash. Our technicians built an antidote which we're
giving away for free at
And you can also read our advice on general preventive measures at

What would you put in Room 101?
Following this week's centenary issue of LearningWire, next week's
is, not surprisingly, issue 101. Following the theme, we've created
a TrainingZONE Room 101, based on the TV programme of the same name,
where you can nominate pet-hates and irritations from the world of
training, learning, HR and organisational development to be
consigned to oblivion. Next week, we'll let you know what some of
the leading people in the field would put into their Room 101. This
week though, it's your chance and all nominations are welcome.

The following invitations to tender were added last week at

** Space on consultancy stand at NEC Training Solutions Expo
** Point of sale trainers for financial services software
** Venues wanted to hold IT and soft-skills training
** Referrals for graduate recruitment

* Question of the Week *:
Self esteem and the ability to challenge senior management
I have to run a workshop for finance and IT. From our annual staff
views survey the feedback has been that these functions feel
isolated and disrespected. Because many of the grades are at the
lower end of the organisation, the job holders also feel unable to
challenge or push back. I would like to address this in a team-build
workshop day. Does anyone have any suggestions?
