This is the 100th issue of LearningWire since we first published it
in January 1998. That first issue went to 50 people; this issue is
going to almost 13,000. First, a huge "Thank You" to you for your

popular and widely accessed professional community for people
involved in training and HR certainly in the UK and in many other
countries around the world. You may not be aware that our other

E-learning may ease skills shortage

In last week's wire we reported on the DFEE's report into skills
gap in Britain. The worsening global shortage of IT specialists
has sparked strong growth in the IT certification market, with
e-learning providing an obvious solution to the problem of
providing technical IT training.

Association of Learning Providers launches
------------------------------------------
An alliance has been formed between training organisations and
providers of vocational training to give them a clear voice with
which to lobby government. The combined membership of the ALP,
which launched at the Training for Britain conference on 13 April,
will constitute a powerful group, as they deliver over 80% of work-
based training in the UK.

Would you trade salary for extra training?

According to a survey 60% of Scots would be willing to accept a lower
salary if they were given greater additional training opportunities.
These findings were announced at the launch by Scottish Enterprise of
the National Training Awards in Scotland.

OU students virtually graduate

Open University (OU) students graduating with a Masters in Open
and Distance Education participated in the world's first virtual
awards ceremony on 31 March. Writing in the Independent's Open
Eye supplement, Sir John Daniel, Vice-Chancellor of the Open
University says that as the students had completed their degrees
on-line, it made perfect sense for them to receive their awards
in the same way.

Coping with that dreaded computer illness
-----------------------------------------
We're having to write this story in code! Following last week's
panic attack on computers around the world, many network managers
have quickly installed e-mail filters to search for the dreaded
words and bounce e-mails containing them - so we can't spell them out
in this story! Our workstations were affected very early causing
some systems to crash. Our technicians built an antidote which we're

views survey the feedback has been that these functions feel
