What leading trainers would put in Room 101
Last week we asked TrainingZONE members about their 'favourite'
irritations to be consigned to oblivion in Room 101. You

Industrial Society survey reports increased emphasis on evaluation
According to a survey by the Industrial Society, the need for
business efficiency is driving an increase in evaluating
training. The research reveals that 2 out of 3 companies
responding have increased their commitment to training evaluation
in the past two years. Predictably, Investors in People and
senior management pressure are also credited as having an effect
on the increased importance being placed on evaluation.

National Work-Life Forum
The problem of achieving a healthier balance between the demands
of the workplace and the need to have a good social and personal
life have been increasingly emphasised by both government and
larger employers over recent months. Last week was National Work-
Life Balance Week and the new forum of public and private
employers and policy makers who make up the Work-Life Forum have
published a report on strategies for a better balance in the new
century, a summary of which is available for download.

The appraisal process is embedded in the culture of many an
organisation today, but is it just a paper exercise?

CBI demands an end to 'second-class' apprenticeships
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) says that the status
and quality of training provided by the government's Modern
Apprenticeship programme must be improved in order to reduce
drop-out rates.

Lord Puttnam urges compulsory levy for training
Companies should be required by the government to pay a training
levy if they are not investing enough in the skills of their
workforce, according to Lord Puttnam, chairman of the General
Teaching Council and government adviser.

Following the successful application for Chartered status, the
IPD is due to relaunch as the Chartered Institute of Personnel
