There were no big surprises in the budget for those involved in
workplace learning last week - given that the Department for
Education and Employment seems to make an announcement regarding
funding for a new project or initiative every month, it's probably
already rushed off its feet with plans. What we did get was yet more
money for the New Deal and Modern Apprenticeships, with a suggestion
that the government is willing (but not committed) to explore the
idea of a new tax credit for training. The government remains
convinced that New Deal is achieving its targets, while independent
research is underway to examine the scheme closely. For all the new
announcements, TrainingZONE would like to see more research like this
to establish whether these sums of money are being directed to the
right places.
