The world for managers in the 21st century requires more, in less
time, with fewer resources, or so it appears to many in
managerial roles. In situations where time is constantly at a
premium, devoting time to coaching may be the last thing on a
manager's mind, but the Industrial Society's School of Coaching
think that's even more of a reason to devote time to getting the
best out of team performance. At the recent HRD 2001 show,
TrainingZONE spoke to David Webster, the School's MD, about the
role of the school in developing managers at a time when many are
facing an increasing number of challenges in the workplace.

With online learning often the top of the headlines, it's easy to
forget that technology can allow for more than just courses
delivered through the web or on CDROMs. TrainingZONE's
workshop area has been used for online discussion for several
years now. During this time, our Tuesday lunchtime sessions held
at have covered topics as varied as managing poor performance,
action learning, making a reality of CPD and developing trainers
skills. Each session has a facilitator who sets out the topics
for the day's discussion, welcomes participants and encourages
discussion and dialogue during the 45 minute session. If you
think you'd like to try your hand as a facilitator, we're looking
for training practitioners to host a number of sessions over the
next few months. The technology we use is at the simpler end of
some of the collaborative tools on offer today - just type into
