Editor's note
=============
We kick off this month's theme, management development, with a
dedicated wire on the subject. If you're trying to find the
time, or inspiration, to put together activities for succession
planning or developing established managers, start here. The
Toolkit area offers a number of possibilities for hands-on
activities which can be used immediately. If you're looking to
establish a more comprehensive programme, there's a range of
open courses or a directory of trainers and consultants happy to
offer their services. If you've got a thorny problem around the
topic, see some of the latest postings on Any Answers -
others experiences could provide the solution. We hope these
suggestions will help you well on the way to developing
successful managers.

Any Answers: Management development
-----------------------------------
In keeping with this month's theme, here's a selection of recent
questions posed:
- Alex Ferguson seeks advice on suitable courses for an
experienced but 'unqualified' manager: 'As a manager with 40
years working experience looking for a career change and with no
A levels, no degree and no letters I feel disadvantaged when
applying for posts which I am qualified for by experience only. I
am looking for a reasonably quick course of action which would
help to formalise what I know.'
- From Mike Kitson: 'Does anyone have a set of competencies for
executive managers - any type of organisation will do. I am not
after role specific (i.e. Marketing or Finance) ones but rather
ones concerning strategic leadership etc.'
- Richard Rogers asks: 'Does anyone have any practical tools /
techniques or approaches that they use for succession planning? I
am also interested in ways that HR Consultants / Line managers
can be trained in these techniques.'
