TrainingZone Live – thoughts of Training Manager part 1

default-16x9

I’m off to the 2 day extravaganza that is ‘TrainingZone Live’ on May 25th/26th, so I thought I’d share what I’m looking forward to getting out of this event. I’ll also let you know how it is going ‘on the day’ and a post-event debrief in subsequent posts.

As I’ve recently been working on evaluation of learning, the first name that caught my attention was a certain Mr Kirkpatrick. First time in the UK presenting a workshop on the latest thinking around the Four Levels? Count me in! Then I discover that the second day is a WHOLE DAY devoted to ‘Training on Trial’, focusing on demonstrating how L&D is adding to the bottom line. This is going to help give me and my department even greater ‘clout’ and influence in the business. Fantastic.

Dr Peter Honey you say? As in Honey and Mumford? And he’s speaking at the event? Honey and Mumford was one of the first learning theories I was ever introduced, back in the heady days of the Graduate Development Programme of my first job. It fascinated me back then and was perhaps the first indication that L&D might be the career for me. Whilst I fought this inclination for a few years, sure enough I’ve ended up in L&D, and sure enough I love my job! Thank you, Peter, and I very much look forward to your session.

Now ‘Belbin Team Roles’ is something I’ve read about but not really had the opportunity to truly adapt and integrate into my work, so I can’t wait to find out more at Barrie Watson’s session. And Nigel Harrison’s workshop on changing our approach from ‘training solutions’ to ‘business solutions’ sounds very intriguing – looking forward to having my thinking challenged! (Have a look at an interview with him here.)

There are also some punchy and interesting talks from Charles Jennings and Barry Wilding-Webb, and Yehuda Shinar will be talking about Winning Intelligence. As he was involved with the successful England Rugby World Cup-winning team of 2003, he’s got my attention right from the word go!

Wow – what a line up. If you’re going, I’m looking forward to seeing you there, and if not, watch this space for an update and debrief…

  1. Discussion group

    Hi folks

Thanks for the blog post owensmiff! Good to hear you’re coming and looking forward to it.

I have started a TrainingZone Live 2010 discussion group.  If you are coming to this year’s event, then the discussion group is the place to share your thoughts and ideas and obviously your feedback during and after the event.
