"One of life's great pleasures is getting surprises.
The couple next door to me are 82 but they don't look
or behave in the ways that many may think 82 year olds
should. Recently one of them was ill and was diagnosed
with osteoporosis, she was given medication to help and
I found a leaflet which explained about the best type
of diet and exercises you could do as self help measures.
Now, you might expect that an elderly person of 82 would
just take the medicine and not bother too much about
anything much else; especially since it involves a lifestyle
change not this lady she has a really admirable attitude,
she is doing the best she possibly can to limit the effects
of this disease on her body. I think its partially because
she doesn't perceive herself to be old and disabled she
still sees herself - maybe equivalent to - say -
someone in their fifties or sixties. How often do
we say to ourselves I can't do that I'm too old?
Or that's not in my nature to do that? Or I don't normally
behave that way so I won't and we don't, therefore we are
not taking an opportunity to be surprised by what we can
achieve if we lose some of these limiting perceptions
of ourselves. "
