Can anyone suggest interesting or original venues with a scientific, professional or medical connection which might be suitable for a meeting of 250-300 senior people in the London area?

Offering couple of ideas
I’ve used the Royal College of Pathologists at Carlton House Terrace (www.rcpath.org). They have a superb room with good AV and general support, but might not take your numbers.
I think some of the other Royal Colleges also let out their rooms, or you might try the Worshipful Companies in the City – Waterman’s Hall was an excellent place a while ago.
Or how about the lecture facilities at the Natural History or Science Museums, or the Royal Institution?
