Virtual Team Building, can it be done?

default-16x9

I am looking for information on virtual team building and/or some examples of team building activities/exercises that can be conducted via distance approaches (i.e., tele/videoconference, discussion groups, other). In particular, I need exercises that can build rapport, trust, openness or willingness to share ideas, etc.

Thanks for any info.

There are some books on virtual teams available on Amazon and there is a company that works in this area http://www.agility.co.uk (I don’t have any experience of them)

I’d be interested hearing how you get on.

  2. teams and nlp
AT PRESENT I AM DOING A MSc IN HRM, A LECTURER IN UNI INTRODUCED NLP (NEURO LINGUISTICAL PROGRAMMING TO US, ANOTHER LECTURER STATES A TEAM AS A GROUP OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER FOR A SPECIFIC PURPOSE SO IN EFFECT I BELIEVE ALL INTERACTION OF MORE THAN 1 IS TEAMWORK FOR VARYING REASON AND PRODUCTIVE FOR VARYING LENGTHS OF TIME YET IN ESSENCE SINCE TEAMS. SO VIRTUAL TEAMS MUST EXIST EVEN IF SARCASTICALLY VIRTUALY NONE EXISTENT MEMBERS THROUGH LACK OF PARTICIPATION IN A CURRENT TEAM..MMMMMM

Keith Dixon kindly mentioned us above and let me know of your question, giving me the opportunity to reply here.

My company Knowledge Ability does training and consulting in virtual teaming (see http://www.knowab.co.uk/wbw2c )

One service is ETHOS which is about building virtual teams. It’s face to face or virtual using the technologies you mention. ETHOS asks the team “How are we going to work together?” It’s facilitator-led, leading the team to define the processes, practices, values and approaches they will commit to.

It contains 100 questions in 17 topics ranging from technology through to trust.

We can facilitate ETHOS for clients or equip them to run it.

For more information, please contact me. ETHOS services are available in Europe and in the USA.

  4. Trust in Virtual teams
    Lisa

For trust in Virtual Teams read Diane Coutu’s article ‘Trust in Virtual Teams’ – Harvard Business Review – May-June 1998. the research describes that Trust in normal teams evolves in 3 stages. The same types of trust exist in vrtual teams but ‘trust tends to be established, or not, right at the outset. diane describes the process of ‘electronic courting’!
As regards team development several people argue that an initial face-to-face team session is essential to establish a team ‘charter’; make decisions about technology; establish groundrules for communication etc. there are several designs/exercises available. Ring me on 0191 384 5528 if you want more information/copies of articles etc.
