Virtual Teams

default-16x9

Hi everyone, I've been tasked with designing training on managing virtual teams. This organisation has many people 'in the field' across the country and internationally, where technology is sometimes not accessible (and even in this country our computer network does not allow sound - ???) I'm wondering if anyone knows of research into this area or if anyone has written any training etc. in this area. Ideas appreciated! Thanks very much, Elise Whittaker

  1. Building Virtual Teams
    Hi Elise

I have a remote team dotted all over the UK and find this model works very well when I have access to online solutions such as skype, webex, online survey tools for testing etc.

If they do not all have access to a pc then perhaps you could introduce audio training tools such as CD’s? Visual training tools such as workbooks? I must admit I am finding your question a slight challenge, particularly as not all of your team are able to utilise technology. You could always break the team up and buddy up those with/without access to technology…

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help,

    Sam

  2. Book and extracted tips
    Hi there,

I was recently asked to design a workshop of a client on manging remote teams, and I found the book “Virtual leadership: Sectrets from the round table for the multi-site manager” by Jacyln Kostner absolutely superb, and very easy to read. It is in the style of the One-Minute manager books, and I believe that the author has written other, more traditional style books on the topic.

I extracted some of the key points into a handout, and it is available free on my website. http://www.keystonedevelopment.co.uk/pdf_files/Managing_Remote_Teams.pdf

It is only ‘top line’ but hopefully, it will give you a starting point/some ideas.
