WTC virus

default-16x9

The latest virus to hit the IT world has manipulatively used the recent attack on America to help spread itself. Trend Micro, a security company, have warned users to look out for an email with the subject title “FW: Peace between America and Islam”. The email contains an infected attachment titled “WTC.exe”. Due to its timing users are more likely to be curious enough to open the attachment.

Once the malignant attachment is opened it reformats the PC’s hard drive, deletes certain documents and installs a file named ‘Zacker.vbs’. Susan Orbuch, a spokeswoman for Trend Micro states, “the timely social engineering of this virus leads us to believe that it has a high likelihood of spreading. Corporations should be using content filters to block executables at the gateway so users don’t even have a chance to open these things.”

Experts have compared this virus to that of the “I love you” virus as they both copy themselves to everybody in the users address book. Trend Micro believes that the WTC virus uses Microsoft Outlook to spread itself.
