I work in the Organisational Development area for a company of around 700 staff. I have been approached by a line manager in my organisation who would like assistance in supporting a some new employees with either dyslexia or unspecified learning difficulties.
I am interested in any ideas on what can be done to assist these people to learn and develop in our company.

dyslexia
Have you tried the Dylexia Society? They are based in Leeds and may be able to advise.
Good Luck.

Support
We have done work with a number of employees with dyslexia (this was confirmed by a pschological evaluation) and also some who had characted recognition problems. It depends on what support levels you are seeking, there is funding available to support people with learning difficulties in the workplace. If you want further information please provide details of the area you are baed in to me at Tbdgloballtd@aol.com
is it dyslexia or basic skills?
I have worked with some individuals who claimed to have dyslexia, and discovered that although in some cases this was true, in others it was that they had needs in relation to basic literacyor numeracy and due to the stigma related to this did not want to say so. If the need is in relation to basic literacy & numeracy then the Basic skills agency may be the best place to start. In addition, according to numerous press articles then it looks as though there may be some Govt funding available in this area, as there are now targets for increasing the level of skills in the workplace in relation to literacy & numeracy.
Try Multi-Sensory Techniques
One of the biggest problems I face as both a Dyslexic and an IT Trainer is problems with short term memory, telling the time and differentiating left and right. Multi-sensory teaching always helps – mind maps, colours, memory tricks, ways of telling left from right etc all help to make life a bit easier. It doesn’t all have to be pen-pushing. http://www.dyslexia-teacher.com and it’s assosciated pages will make for interesting reading and have lots of hints, tips and ideas. It might be worth you considering doing a certificate in dyslexia tuition – info available on the website
