Leadership Gold Medal for HSBC Chair

Sir John Bond, group chairman of HSBC, has been awarded a "Gold Medal, for his strategic leadership and management skills.

The award, which is the highest honour conferred by the Chartered Management Institute, recognises his stewardship in developing business values that have successfully crossed international cultures and borders.

Sir John has been chairman of HSBC over the last six and a half years, and was previously group chief executive of HSBC Holdings between 1993 and 1998. During this time he has overseen successful investments by the Group in Bermuda, China, France, Mexico and the US, with the acquisition of Household International giving HSBC a new line of business in consumer finance.

Mary Chapman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute said: “The pace of change and the drive to build global brands has had a major impact on the nature of management and leadership. Sir John Bond’s vision and determination to maintain high service levels for clients the world over is indicative of his energy for business and a real commitment to deliver effective results.”

The Gold Medal is presented annually to an individual who is active in general management in the private, public or voluntary sectors. It recognises those who have demonstrated outstanding achievement through their vision and ability to deliver success for their organisation.

Previous recipients include Sir John Harvey Jones and Sir Colin Marshall.
