Review – Microsoft Exchange 2000

default-16x9

The future for MS exchange 2000 certainly looks much better than the previous 5.5 version and apparently a completely new look and feel has been made to the messaging and groupware platform and suggests the beginning of the end for traditional client/server messaging architecture.

The functionality and reliability are much improved and this version looks and acts more like Outlook thus making sure that this application is more up to being used for the Web.

Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, is designed so that it will integrate with Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system,
and meet the needs for businesses of all sizes, from small businesses to the larger distributed organisation. Exchange 2000 Server is outlined to have three broad requirements that customers wanted in the next generation of their messaging and collaboration infrastructure:

  • Increased reliability, scalability, and performance of the enterprise messaging and collaboration platform.
  • Further utilisation of the capabilities of the operating system to reduce the cost of system ownership.
  • New forms of collaboration, integration of Web and workflow application design.
  • A single infrastructure and user model for working with messages, documents, and applications to increase productivity.
  • A communications infrastructure that provides access to information at any time and from anywhere through emerging technologies such as wireless communication, unified messaging, handheld devices, and tele-conferencing.

The design team stated that they based their three goals on what the customer requested for the Exchange 2000 Server product.

Additional features are that Exchange 2000 can now support Dynamic HTML and Extensible Markup Language/Extensible Stylesheet Language. Those using Exchange can now compose HTML messages and access public folders that was not previously available in 5.5.
