At the Emerging Leader Program, Carlene Ellis of Intel addressed the subject of "Leading In A Technical World: What Every Leader Should Know To Stay Effective." Here are some of her thoughts on the subject.

Linkage: How would you rate the importance of technology to the everyday garden variety leader, for someone who is not connected to technology by title or organization in an explicit fashion?


CE: Not to be condescending, but I find that question almost humorous. There's going to be over a billion connected PCs by the year 2005. Ask the CEO of WalMart ten years ago how important technology was to his company. He was not confused. Sam Walton ran WalMart’s just in time inventory systems basically as his vision, not his IT leader's vision. If you think about that, that's before the deluge of the Internet, before the introduction of appliances, and before technology really started consuming the everyday person. If you go back 20 years, ATMs were envisioned and what, 80% of all banking is done today through that device. I have not walked physically in a bank in over 10 years, literally.
