I am setting up a new Staff L&D library initially aimed at sales. management and self development. The company is in the Finance industry. It is a young company that has grown rapidly. The training department consists of me so I need some additional "support" to help development staff and Management.
Does anyone have any suggestions for "must have" books that they have found have been useful and easy to read etc?

Take a look at:
https://www.trainingzone.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.cgi?id=150768&d=680&h=608&f=626&dateformat=%25e-%25h-%25y – this coveres books on training that you personally might want to consider.
For essential reference I would also suggest:
Mullins, L. J. Management and Organisational Behaviour – if you only buy one book on management this should be the one. It is big, has good academic credentials but is easy to read and immensely useful.
Lucas, B. Discover your Hidden Talents – a stimulating book that focuses on developing yourself as a lifelong learner.
Pedler, M. A Managers Guide to Self Development – covers key issues ranging from emotional resilience to creativity and has plenty of practical activities.
Barwise, P. & Meehan, S. Simply Better – the best book on marketing that I have read in a long while.
Rackham, N. S.P.I.N. Selling Feildbook – 10 years old but a good practical sales book for trainers and sellers alike.
Happy reading!

I would like to recommend …
Jeffrey Gitomer’s Little Red Book of Selling & Customer Satisfaction is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless.
Ken Blanchard’s Raving Fans.
Any of the ‘Pocket Books’ published by Management Pocketbooks Ltd
Happy Reading

I have a few

suggested books

The 7 habits of highly effective people – Stephen Covey
Gung Ho – Ken Blanchard (popular writer!!)
Fish! – Stephen C. Lundin, Ph.D., Harry Paul and John Christensen
cheers

My Favs…
Hi Claire
I would agree with all the recommendations thus far, but have a small question…are the books for you or the rest of the staff?
If the focus is for yourself and support for your training, take a look at the Fenman website…lots of good stuff, if a little expensive!
Training specific books:
Training with NLP – John Seymour & Joseph O’Connor
Tales for Trainers – Margaret Parkin
Super Teaching – Eric Jensen
Sizzle & Substance – Eric Jensen
The Big book of Humorous Training Games – Tamblyn/Weis
Facilitation – Trevor Bentley
Training Plus! – Brian Clegg
The Inspirational Trainer – Paul Z Jackson
Transactional Analysis for Trainers – Hay
Self Help/Development:
The Mind Gym
Purple Spotted Oranges – Martin Shervington
Peak Performance through NLP – John Seymour & Martin Shervington
You could also look at Tony Buzan’s works (Mind Mapping, Creative Thinking, Speed Reading etc)
Others:
The Ultimate book of Business Creativity – Ros Jay (great for running group exercises and so much more!)
Guerrilla Selling – Levinson, Gallagher & Wilson
All of these are easy to read and offer practical advice as opposed to just theory.
I would also suggest:
Training Reference Books:
Learning & Development – Rosemary Harrison
Training Interventions – Reid & Barrington
There are of course many more! Good luck with the library!
Ask your people what they want.
Claire
If the intention is that the staff should make use of the library and actually read the books would it be possible to get their input into what they might like to see on the shelves.
I have never yet read a book that I was told to read, but I have read many that friends suggested I might like.
You could buy every book that is suggested here but if nobody reads them?

For Your Improvement
Hi There Claire!
An excellent developemnt and coaching guide is a book called “For Your Improvement” Michael M Lombardo & Robert W Eichinger from Lominger’s Leadership Architect suite of resources. http://www.lominger.com
This is a reference book more than an ‘easy read’ and extremely useful.

Reading room
We’ve started keeping a log of the interesting stuff we’re reading. You can find it here.

It may be worth having a rating or review system for your employees so they can recommend (or not) resources that they’ve used.
Cluetrain Manifesto
This book gives a good indication of the state of the market and where it looks like going.
