I am talking to a number of people about the need to assessment knowledge within an organisation. Many people currently train but few people I meet could tell me what the effect was.
So, to capture this in a statement I have been looking for a single statement - preferably a quote that has the 'sit up and notice' effect. The only thing I have found is the government quotes of a competent workforce being the future of the Country. Whereas there is no arguing with this statement, it isn't really the dramatic WIIFM statement.
Can anyone please send me in the right direction?
Many thanks in advance.

Change is not a choice
Change is inevitable and continuous. We can either profit from it, to the detriment of the competition, or we can react to it like a boxer on the ropes.

Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.
Mark Twain, Pudd’nhead Wilson (1894)
On the mountains of truth you can never climb in vain: either you will reach a point higher up today, or you will be training your powers so that you will be able to climb higher tomorrow.
Friedrich Nietzsche

The knowledge gap
Before you can manage you must measure. Once you have measured the knowledge gap you must manage to close it; a constantly moving but highly prized objective.
Knowledge
TH Huxley said:
If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, where is the man with so much knowledge as to be out of danger?
or James Madison:
Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.

This is fun … some more then:
* ‘If you think learning is expensive – try ignorance’ (Harvard President, Derek Bok)
* 77% of people prefer to work for an employer who supports their learning, than one who gives big salary rises; 72% of us think we should devote more time to development, to enhance career employability
(Source: Campaign for Learning’s 2002 MORI Poll of Attitudes to Learning)…a bit long this one but backs up the positive noises with hard evidence – try it as a sub-quote?
* There are three kinds of people: Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who say, ‘what happened?’ (Casey Stengel)
* I hate quotations (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
