I have just started a new role as the Training Officer with a voluntary organisation based in Edinburgh. I have a small budget for purchasing training books (probably £200 at most) and would love to know if anyone has any good recommendations for books that would help me spice up my training (e.g. good icebreakers) at minimal cost.
I have been training for a while, but am always looking for new ideas and inspiration!

Training books
Hello Pauline,
My company represents a number of producers of both text and video based training material.
One particular training book they do that sounds appropriate is called ”51 Tools for Transforming your Training”. It gives useful tips on all manner of training.
If you are interested in receiving details of this or any others please feel free to call me on the number below.

Books for basics, internet for icebreakers
I would thoroughly recommend saving your money to buy books on training principles – such as “Training Practice” by Penny Hackett revised in 2003. If you want to get into building training events using accelerated learning principles (to find out more visit http://www.acceleratedlearning.com) then I highly recommend “The Accelerated Learning Handbook” by Dave Meier. A bold way of making training effective and memorable.
The best place for (free) icebreakers and ideas for training exercises is undoubtably the internet (for instance http://www.businessballs.com, http://www.thiagi.com, http://www.jvdcreativity.com and http://www.simulations.co.uk to name a few).
In my experience books containing games and icebreakers are not worth the investment.
Training resources
Pauline
I agree with Emma, there are a lot of trainers who have offered resources and stuff to share on the Internet and this provides a valuable starting point when spicing up your training. TrainerBase at http://www.trainerbase.co.uk has quite a number of free resources, provided by its membership, most are free to download.
Again with the internet in mind, have a look at Anglo Ameerican Books http://www.anglo-american.co.uk based in Carmarthen, they often have some very good books on offers.
Hope this is of use.
Peter
Thanks!
Many thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions – much appreciated!
