Does anyone have any ideas for developing an interactive training presentation on multiskilling or have had experience of multiskilling, either positive or negative which they could share?

Dear Caroline,
One of the issues I have found particularly sensitive when training in multiskilling, is participant perception and fear that multiskilling means that they will lose their expertise and status in their field. For example – when working with what were designated keyboard operators and trying to multiskill them in clerical work. The keyboard operators were proud of their skill. There can be an expectation that the people being multiskilled will be excited by the idea of gaining new skills and responsibilities – and eventually this maybe the case – but initially I think you can expect or at least consider that there may be some resistance and even anger to the idea. As a trainer I have found the secret is to allow expression and recognition of this and not to go into the activity assuming that all those affected will by wildly thrilled by the idea. Allow for some grieving.
