I am looking for a good training course/information on dealing with the real practical issues of handling long term absence, particulalry those absences which are not quite as long as they should be!

For v. useful perspectives on this complex problem, a report published last week by the Institute of Employment Studies is worth reading: Costing Sickness Absence in the UK (IES report 382, £30.00)
We offer a course that considers motivation, work design, relationship management, coaching, occupational health and stress aspects of the issue.

I can recommend a course run by Human Resources in Action it covers pratical aspects such as measuring absence, and determining teh causes of absence as will a suggesting strategies to increase attendance. They run open courses all over the country.
