Accrediting non-formal learning

default-16x9

We are a local authority youth service, providing non-formal education to young people aged 11 - 25. We are seeking to establsih a local framework that will support our staff in recognising and accrediting the learning and development achieved by young people thorugh their involvement in activities with us. This framework will need to recognise our work with schoools (both exisitng and potential) and include a range of nationally avaiable awards and programmes (such as Key Skills, ASDAN awards etc.). Further, we wish to develop a local scheme, enabling us to capture some of the 'softer' developmental areas and which will suport young people's transition into those more foramlised accredited opportunities. Finlly, we require, at the end of the period, a development plan to enable us to move forward with the work achieved, integrating it into our every day activity.

The person (people) undertaking this work should have expereince and a good knowledge of working with young people in non-formal settings, preferably as a youth worker.

  1. Working with Youth Groups
    Hi Diane
Our organisation does a lot of work with 13-16 and 16-19 year olds. We run engagement programmes using music, performing arts and DJing to harness enthusiasm and creativity and the students work to achieve an OCN accredited award at Level 2 in Sound Technology. As part of the process we use a IT based tool that records their situation at the beginning and throughout the programme. This tool, which we developed, is in use in various organisations in the UK and Ireland, including the Prison Service, Jobcentre Plus and the Dept of Education and Learning (Ireland). The tool focus on understanding barriers to progression and monitors progress against an action plan.
