Barriers to starting the coaching relationship

default-16x9

Hi to everyone,

I am doing some research into the reasons and doubts people have in starting a coaching relationship for the first time and I was wondering if anyone would like share their experiences either as a potential client or a coach.

Many thanks in advance John

  1. coachee realises that…..

….the coach is going to encourage/cajole/remind/push them to make decisions about their career….when really what they want is a warm soft shoulder to cry on or a person to do things for them.

  2. Coachee’s negative attitudes

The coachee has been told by their line manager that they are going to be coached. They don't want to be or understand why

Coachee thinks they already do everything right/well. Why would they need coaching?

Coachee thinks that the coach doesn't know as much as them

  3. Confidentiality

The coachee is worried that the coach will report back to their employer, this makes the coachee guarded and hampers the coaching itself.

  4. Barriers to starting the coaching relationship

This post is really interesting. I think almost all of the people have experienced this especially in times that you just met your coach at that time.

  6. Building relationships is important in coaching

    • In all what I feel is as follows:
    • a) Good production + good relationships = peak performance
    • b) Good production + poor relationships = potential to win but little commitment
    • c) Poor production + good relationships = commitment to win but little ability
