Can anyone advise on a relatively quick and simple method of how to go about benchmarking reward packages for certain jobs? I know there are a number of companies around who are prepared to carry out this exercise for a fee but this is not an option.

Why are you doing this? Is there a particular job that’s a problem?
When I have done this sort of thing, a fairly quick but not that inaccurate way is to grab suitable advertising media like broadsheets and trade mags. A current jobholder may well be able to get you to the right press, or even do the legwork. Also, go to web-based job sites and professional bodies for more details. One of your colleagues will be a member of a relevant body and will have access to some info, I expect.
If you use an agency for other recruitment and thereby have a relationship, why not ask them? Mind you… agencies!
Soon, you’ll have a lot of data and that will get you close (based on the good ol’ 80/20 rule!)
