Buying Equality/Diversity Resources

default-16x9

I have just started a new job as a trainer in equality/diversity issues for a Public Sector Organisation. I have some money to spend on training resources, as the organisation does not have any.

Does anyone have any suggestions of training packs/DVDs they have used/seen that they would recommend?

  1. buying equality resources
    Hi Derek

I still say you can’t beat an old video entitled “The eye of the storm”
Jane Elliott is a brilliant speaker – if you get the chance do go and see her, if you are new to equality and diversity issues she is vital to your self development.

My company are producing a training pack on Diversity in the form of short stories on CD and stimulating questions if you’d like to knoiw more please get in touch

  2. Book
    Hi

The Diversity Training handbook by Phil Clements and John Jones is excellent.

    Publisher: Kogan Page
    ISBN: 0749437227

It’s well structured and helps you to ensure that you’re not missing anything important. It’s available from your favourite on-line bookstores for £20.

  3. The Eye Of the Storm
Jane Elliott’s video is available from the following web site, as are other diversity training videos and DVDs. I haven’t seen them myself therefore I cannot comment.

I agree with Claudine regarding the Diversity Training Handbook; it is an excellent resource on how to deliver the training.

  4. have you considered e-learning?
A lot of people think e-learning is a capital investment that requires hardware, software and large license fees, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

For the price of sending only one person to an instructor-led class, you could purchase 20 “units” of e-learningfrom a choice of publishers and monitor exactly what each user has done.

It doesn’t matter if it is 5 people taking 4 courses each, or 2 people taking 10 courses each, and when you run out you can purchase more as required.

We work a lot with local councils and we also run the platform which is delivering ECDL training for the NHS. If you would like to know more send me an email.

    Regards,
    Ken Wood

  5. Thanks for the help
Thanks for your comments, I am familiar with the eye of the storm video – but it feels a bit dated to me and could turn off those learners who might be resistant to these issues.

However I note on the neish website that they have some recent UK versions which could be a great help.

    Thanks,

  6. What do you want to achieve?
It depends on which avenue you want to go down. If you want a cognitive input e-learning may well suit, if you’re wanting to change hearts and minds, facilitation is the key. One video that is available through the Disability Rights Council is called Talk. It’s very useful as it turns the thinking around although it does only focus on what might be classed as visible disabilities. Please speak to me further if you want bespoke resources

  7. Diversity & Disability Training
Grass Roots provide totally measurable workbook or on-line training programmes within the public (and private) sector. Please see the website http://www.grg.com or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

  8. Free from Disability Rights Commission
I’ve just seen a challenging and quite different dvd from the DRC… following a weird ‘electrical storm’ it puts a “normal” person as the minority.

Challenging to watch and really makes you think. I emailed them to ask what they had (difficult to navigate site).

http://www.drc.gov.uk is the site address… the dvd is called ‘talk’

  9. Thanks! I’m all spent up
I have now purchased a variety of resources around the issue of equality & diversity. 2 excellent DVDs from skillsboosters, a diversity game and some other training resources. (Talk DVD is free and excellent as well).

If anyone wants further information please get in touch with me.
