Nine months after the second version of Code Red emerged, it appears that the worm is still infecting systems worldwide and could easily have the destructive effect we witnessed last time. Dug Song, an ethical hacker for Arbor Networks expressed his concern with “the major potential for major distributed deniel-of-service [DdoS] attacks using Code Red servers”. The original Code Red virus affected over 350,000 servers in under 24 hours.

Arbor has been investigating the virus’ activity for the past seven months and has revealed that over five-million web address were infected with Code Red in the past six months.
