I’m looking for an activity/game that reflects the skills required to delegate effectively.  I run sessions on managing people and have material on how to delegate, but I would like an exercise to demonstrate this.

One Response

  1. give them a gold STAR

    I use the STAR mnemonic:

the person has to have/be given the

Skills~ to do the job (at least at basic level if the delegation is to develop the skill to a higher level)

Time~ to do the job (this is an amount of time appropriate to their skill level if they are learning)

Authority~ to get other people to supply appropriate input or give them the time

Responsibility/Recognition~ for achieving the successful completion of the job ie they can’t just say "You trusted me, YOU are responsible!" if they fail.  And if they succeed, there is kudos or a tangible reward for them.

I get the delegates to consider/brainstorm/discuss three elements of each:

    1. Reasons~ Why does a person need this?

    2. Implications~ so what must I take into account, and do, in order to ensure that they have it (eg for Authority, do I give them a "warrant card", do I give them "acting rank", do I announce publicly that they are being deputised?

    3. Consequences~ for the person, the task, my credibility, if I don’t ensure they have the STAR.

    I hope this helps
