Development of mulitmedia training

default-16x9

We are about to implement online learning in the company, and would like ideas (from experience) on how the number of hours required to develop one hour of multimedia (online) training.

  1. hours required for on line content
We author content for Web based learning materials and use a purpose built tool.
To produce one course element that delivers in 2.5 hours approx. including graphics, audio, text, role plays and assessments requires on average 4 working weeks of “person hours”. So about 152 hours. We follow very strict guidelines and QA procedures and all materials are built around ID techniques.

This may vary with the tools used and the style but I hope it helps.

  2. Hours to develop 1 hour of online training
There was an old maxim when I started developing online materials that for each hour of learning you needed 300 hours of development (including sourcing the content & developing the process). If you have all the content, media etc and learning process, then you can get it down to 30 hours – but only if you have all the resources ready!
