DfEE reports highest ever numbers in employment

Employment Minister Andrew Smith said: “Today’s Labour Market Statistics show a very welcome increase in employment – u119,000 over the quarter – in the face of uncertain world conditions, with a new record number of people in jobs and a healthy level of vacancies, accompanied by a slight rise in the claimant count.”

The rise in unemployment recorded by the labour force survey is accounted for by 156,000 more people joining the active labour force. 119,000 of them are in jobs; the rest of this increased participation has resulted in a rise in ILO unemployment of 37,000 on the quarter to 1.84 million (6.3%).
