As part of an evaluation training course I am designing i am looking for a short exercise to allow students to establish formative, summative, internal and external evaluations.

Any ideas or tips would be appreciated.

If you have any experience of funded projects then the formative and summative evaluation should be an integral part of the overall project management. The project could be where government / EU money provided the funding or it could be a contract that you have been involved in.

The exemplar funded project becomes the case study. The participants are asked to develop the questionnaire / instrument to be used to establish what is taking place at the formative and summative levels.
This will allow the participants to be creative in thinking about evaluation. I have used this approach when working with project teams and helping them write briefs for external evaluators. Email TLC for more suggestions if you wish.
