help wanted on competencies

default-16x9

We are looking to introduce core competencies: any examples of simple systems that could be used with all staff? Also looking to pilot 360 degree appraisal - again examples of successful systems would be appreciated. Finally, we are revamping our training and development policy ( at present very rigid and full of do's and don'ts) and wnat to replace it with a much more imaginative learning and development charter. Any ideas? Local government examples would be great.

Ring me on 01908 506996 after 10am today if you want more info.

There are lots of competency systems around but the best way is to make sure you taoilor the competencies and the language to the needs and language/culture of your organsiation. I have done competency reserach to eleicit key competences for amny companies including BT and Royal mail – ring if you wnat advice on how to do it in your organsiation.

There are lots of Co’s offering 360 degree feedback – Pilat and SHL are 2 good examples, again ring me for their details if you don’t have them. You will also need to consider what to do with the feedback generated as the value of 360 degree feedback is in what you do with it.

    Hope this helps

I go with keep it simple and be mindful of your culture.
I have undertaken research in Behavioural competences and managerial effectiveness and I work a lot with assessment of competence against MCI standards. I’ve headed Corporate T&D function for a local authority and work as an MD consultant, often with the analysis and implementation of competency frameworks. Contact me if you would like some help!

  5. Local Government Management Competencies
I am just completing a large scale management development programme for middle and senior local government managers. This involved the research and development of competencies for a 360 feedback process. I also introduced the organization to a very flexible 360 feedback and Personal Development Planning software tool. Give me a call if you would like an informal chat. 6. Competencies – resource
There’s an excellent resource book on competencies ‘For Your Improvement’ by Michael Lombardo and Robert Eichinger. It has 67 ! different competencies with descriptions of skilled, unskilled and overskilled behaviours. Also the same on cards sets. I’m not suggesting you use all of these but it’s a great way of starting to talk about competencies and which might be required for different jobs. I can lend you the cards/book and explain how they can be used – no charge! If you want to discuss approaches to t&d give me a ring – 0191 384 5528 or contact me on andyjaggard@execdevint.co.uk
