How can I progress?

default-16x9

I have been a trainer for a call centre for a year and a half. I do not have a formal training qualification but have attended many courses with the Industrial Society. I would like join a training company and move into broader training especially soft skills.

Could you advise me on the best publications/web sites where positions are advertised. Also any information on qualifications needed and experience.

Thank you

Amanda Simes

I can empathise with your position, I have been an IT trainer for the past 18 months, and for the past 6 months I have been desperate to step outside the box.

To improve my teaching/training skills I have completed the FAETC course (City & Guilds). I can’t recommend this qualification highly enough. There are two initial stages, Stage 1 being 10 weeks, and Stage 2 taking up the rest of the academic year. You can complete Stage 1 or the whole year as a stand-alone qualification; or go on to do Stage 3 as a second academic year. This is the equivilent to a PGCE for post-compulsary education (post-16 age group).

If you are looking to stay in the teaching/training field you would be well advised to look into these qualifications as all teachers involved in FE are going to require them pretty soon.

As for broadening your perspective, I would suggest getting your fingers in as many pies as possible! Try to get involved in broader business issues within your organisation and then you can hopefully use your increasing business knowledge to suggest proactive training aimed at meeting business objectives. If that fails or is just not possible -simply have the confidence to look to move employer. I have left my IT box recently to start a new position that allows me to get involved in many different kinds of training. I have found it to be a natural career progression – hopefully you will too! Good luck.
