How many of us are out there?

default-16x9

I need to do some research to find out approximately how many training and learning professionals there are in the UK.
It isn't all that easy and so far every avenue I have tried comes to a dead end!
In essence I am after the whole number, but it would be more useful if it could be broken down in the following way;
training deliverers,
training designers/consultants
training/learning managers
heads/directors of learning/training
also I'm trying to figure out how many belong to corporates, both private and public, how many are in SME's and how many are in the hundreds of training consultances you find everywhere.
Can anyone help?
It is people employed full time in the profession not occassional trainers, or HR generalists that I am after.

I am not aware of any comprehensive and reliable surveys or government statistics on this since the IFF Research in 1993.
However, here is a stab at an answer.
Training providers registered for VAT in the UK in 2004 numbered 8825. These range for sole providers to major training companies.
The CIPD have about 125,000 members of which about 45,000 work in training.
The best estimate probably comes from the leading industry report produced by Key Note. They estimate that there are around 80,000 trainers in the UK, but this is an educated guess.
And it will depend on whether you count elearning designers, teambuilding facilitators, etc. as ‘trainers’.
I doubt if you will find any break down on roles. From experience I would suggest that about 60% have multiple roles (doing design, delivery, consultancy, procurement in varying combinations), about 30% have a specialist role such as delivery. About 10% are training managers, heads of L&D or similar.
About 24% of those receiving training work in the public sector, so you may be able to use that as a way of estimating proportions, but bear in mind that many trainers who sell there services work across sectors. I would not rely on expenditure figures as a meaningful way of apportioning activity.
Maybe someone else can fill in the gaps.
    Best of luck

  2. how many…
No single place to look at this – but I’ll add my info

I recently bought a qualified mail list of training managers, and head of training titles and there were some 4890. This list was broken down by geography and size of company.

On trainerbase there are 2430 registered trainers – 90 registered suppliers.

    anyone else?

    Mike

  3. Judging by the number of replies
At least 4 of us 🙂

It’s going to be difficult to find a real answer tbh, you might try the CIPD website though, they might have an indication.
