‘How to be an Online Tutor’ by Julia Duggleby

How to be an Online Tutor
By Julia Duggleby
Gower 2000 Hardback
Price: £39.50

As more and more organisations are turning to use the new technologies to enhance learning and training, there is an increasing demand for online tutors to support and facilitate learning.

This book, although looks small for the price, is an excellent resource. It is concise, comprehensive and readable. It is suitable for those new to the area with only very basic knowledge of the internet and technology, but there is also useful information and ideas for those more experienced.

The subject areas are:
Different modes of delivering learning
Why choose online learning
Introduction to the internet
Finding your way around the internet
Using the internet to communicate
Planning a course
Content of a course
The Web as a resource
Designing a course
Preparing delivery
Supporting learners

Each area includes a clear explanation, examples of good practice and ideas. The book also includes references to websites, templates of forms to help plan and deliver an online course, and case studies.

A complete read of the book gives a holistic view of online learning, but after the first read the book is just as valuable as a reference book to dip into as required.

I was initially surprised at the cost of the book, but on reflection I feel it is well worth buying - quality not quantity. It is an excellent resource for organisations and for all types of staff involved in online learning, or for those just wishing to find out more. It is now required reading for my colleagues!
