How to realise your leadership potential

personal_potential

Are you realising your leadership potential? The Journey's Kevin Billett give us his top tips on ensuring you attain yours.

1.    Context & Vision

You cannot be all things to all people, so decide the specific context in which you will lead – business, social, parenting, political etc. Ask, “What am I passionate about?”

2.    Homework

Leadership requires moderate, not compulsive, amounts of research. Be well informed, roundly briefed, but not necessarily expert in your area – you can employ others’ expertise surprisingly cheaply when needed.

3.    Old Conditioning

Dispel any negative beliefs you heard from parents, teachers, bosses or colleagues about yourself and about leadership.

4.    Emotional Consequences

Face the emotional consequences of leadership. Some of it is going to hurt. Remember, if you never fail you are not being innovative enough.

5.     Communication

Remember your body language is often more memorable than your words. Speak from the truth of your own experience; you’ll be more ‘real’ and credible that way. Listen as much as you speak.

6.    Action Plan

Write down three things you will do today, and seven things you will do within one week to actively support your vision. Commit and do them. You’ll never be 100% prepared, so just get on with it.

7.    Feedback

Seek constructive feedback from anyone with a brain. Pay particular attention to different mindsets and opinions. Learn, reappraise and adjust.
