  1. An alternative

    Hi Mel

At an assessment centre I am involved in we have moved away from a formal in-tray exercise to something that seems to be to be much easier to organise and score.

We have a list of about 10 "issues" that the candidates may face in the job (for a first line manager these could include disciplinary issues, additional tasks to distribute to the team, a presentation to prepare for a meeting, a new member of staff to induct and so on) and ask them to rate them in order of importance (not in the order they would tackle them nor do they rank them – they have just told to give each a 1 to 5 score for importance to success in their role – so some may have the same rating). They also have to write a few sentences of rationale for their rating.

I like the exercise because you can include stuff that doesn’t come in the form of "paperwork".

If you would like any more detail feel free to send me a message via my profile.

    Happy New Year

    Jenny
