Induction for work experience pupils

default-16x9

We have a couple of WE pupils joining our Facilities dept for 2 weeks and want to give them a mini induction when they start. Most of what we include in our usual corporate induction day isn't appropriate or relevant to them.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to engage people of this age in the organisation in a fun way, without overloading them with irrelevant information?

  1. Make a game of it
Design a game around the theme of your business that gives them an understanding of the business without being too information heavy.

For example a trainer I know designed a game for a call centre dealing with the vehicle repair industry and they got a garage and some toy cars and trucks to represent the basis of their business and then built a game around that.

The other thing you might want to cover a bit more “seriously” if you like is health & safety and any implications that it might have for them – this could still be done in a game format though for maximum enjoyment.

  2. Try Dept of Education Website

Try the Department of Education website – I think they have provided a leaflet that can be downloaded which outlines what should be included in the training.

  3. Another game
In a previous organisation I put together a type of “trivial pursuits”. I also had a section of H&S, but gave them a copy of the H&S statement to read plus a “Safety in the Office” booklet.
Elsewhere, I have just used a quick check list for them to find out about and shown them a company video and a safety video. The supervisor or manager has had to go through local H&S e.g. fire exits, meeting point, first aiders, etc. and introductions, timekeeping, toilets and so on.
