Might I suggest that your colleague has a look at the ISO 9000 Book by John Rabbitt and Peter Bergh, the ISBN is 0-527-91721-4.
It’s a few years old now but I’ve used it to get up to speed on the processes when working with a number of companies aiming for ISO accreditation.
