Learning approachces in work

I am looking for research into how learning takes place in work. Is it mainly through experience, coaching, courses, self study etc. I'm particularly keen to see something that has data against it, rather than being based on the perceptions of the writer - i.e. it has been completed through some sort of survey. Any ideas?

Perhaps the CIPD has some survey or research they have done.

I have read that the most useful learning takes place on the job.
