New research shows continuing IT skills gap and training mis-match
------------------------------------------------------------------
New independently conducted research published this week shows that in the IT sector a substantial skills gap continues, which training is failing to reduce. Commissioned by NETg, this detailed study reveals a variety of problems: HR not understanding the needs of IT professionals; training not aligned with business strategy; lack of adequate planning and follow-up for IT training; and a lack of good performance measures. Whilst the research is focused on the IT sector, many of the same conclusions are reported for other areas of staff development.

Is staff development an entitlement?

Well, you might think the answer is obvious. Lifelong learning, CPD, and individual learning accounts are all the rage. This editorial article explores the results from a recent TrainingZone survey into attitudes towards staff entitlements to training, and compares these with actual policy and practice on the ground. The results are somewhat depressing: for the vast majority of staff, access to training and development is still very much a hit-and-miss affair.

English Learning and Skills Council offices

PM promotes volunteering by setting an example

In a surprise announcement, the government is to encourage employers to release staff for a least a day per year to engage in volunteering activities within the community. Tony Blair says he will set an example with his own staff, as well as taking a day to volunteer himself.
