Listening Exercise

default-16x9

I need to find an original listening exercise to hone listening skills. Any ideas will be gratefully received.

  1. Now listen very carefully…
    I’ll give a list:

    London Bridge,
    How many pens?
    Observer,
    Gentle persuasion,

If you’ve not heard of one or more of these contact me and I’ll send you the details.
If you give me a bit more detail about objectives I can try to sort out an appropriate exercise.

  2. How to show who’s really listening and why/whynot
I conduct an exercise to introduce listening skills. It is a simple one where you read out a topical short article to people without any introduction. Start by saying something like ‘Hey, listen to this …’ then start reading. Having read it out then offer money – eg $5 (we even got up to $100)and say if they can answer the next 10 questions correctly (by themselves)they can have the money. No-one ever gets past the third question usually, and even when the group has collaborated they still don’t get all the questions. I use an article about a young car thief and even the police group I did it with were not successful. You can then draw out answers to questions like ‘Why didn’t you listen?'(wasn’t introduced/ incentive was not mentioned first/ didn’t appear relevant etc), ‘What would prepare you to listen?’, ‘How can you improve your listening’ and other similar questions.

  3. Listening Skills
Whose listening skills are you hoping to develop?
    Your own or others?
If it’s your own, then I can reccomend a website http://[email protected]
There are many examples of listening exercises which are quite good for self-develoment.
If you are trying to develop other people’s listening skills, there are many quizzes, similar to the ones already mentioned, but you really should be thinking about overcoming the barriers to effective listening.
I’ll be happy to discuss this further if you want to contact me
