Managing data without an LMS

default-16x9

To date we have used a mixture of Excel (to manage waitlist, hold the calendar of events), Outlook (to manage the course attendance) and our HR database to hold data of attendees.

The event calendar is an Excel spreadsheet and accessed via a link on our Intranet site. Essentially you get an Excel sheet that you scroll through until you find the course you want and then go across the columns to the months to see when the session is running.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how better we could work our calendar in this interim period?

  1. Short term solution to an LMS
Having spent a year looking at large LMS systems for a large construction firm – I would say put a solution in that will run for 18 months!

Things to think about – what about good old outlook? this is a much more flexible tool than most people realise – talk to your IT team about inplementing a server version for training management – you can also manage simple resources with it – rooms equipment & people etc if they are all set up on the same group. Outlook can manage a wait list – just schedule 2 events for the same day – one the real programme the other a wait list!
Good luck (and by the way expect the LMS system to talk a lot longer to implement than the brokers say!

Another solution is to talk to http://www.learningmatter.com They have an e-learning deployment system that would also function as a simple LMS & booking system. very cost effective and very quick to deploy. I was very impressed with their offer.

  2. Alternative calendar
    Hi Elizabeth

A very simple solution is to download a 2006 calendar into any Office programme from Microsoft Office on-line templates (enter 2006 calendar into the search box). You can then enter all the course dates and email it out as an attachment. You could do this month by month or for whatever period you want to.
