Minute taking content?

default-16x9

Hi

Working for a charity with limited resources I'm having to create a minute-taking course for administrators.

As this is something I've never created before, can anyone give me any tips, exercises etc I could use in my lesson plan please?

  • Below is the current proposal for course content
  • * The purpose and why we use minutes
  • * How to prepare for minute taking
  • * The difference between informal and formal minutes
  • * What should be included in the minutes
  • * Common writing problems
  • * Effective listening
  • * Tips for effective note-taking
  • * Practical tips on how they can immediately apply to the workplace

I have 3 weeks to pull something together so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and received!

Thanks

Debbie

  1. possible exercise

    Hi Debbie,

I actually run a site which provides read-to-run training material (www.thematerialbank.co.uk) and funnily enough I am just in the process of preparing a minute taking session for publication on the site!

The sort of exercises I would suggest are:

    1. Read the group a short story (could be a well known child's book for example).  Ask them to take notes whilst you do.  Then ask them a few simple questions and, based only on the notes they have taken, see whether or not they can answer the questions.  Or get them to swap their notes around and someone else uses their notes to answer the question!

    2.  Set an exercise which gets them to develop their own shorthand – they don't need to learn proper shorthand to take effective minutes after all, all they need to do is have a personal code that they understand so they can type up their notes properly back in the office.

    3.  Create some flashcards with all the things you would expect in formal and in-formal minutes and then ask them in small groups to divide them up – what should be in a formal set of minutes and what should be in in-formal.  You could take this one step further and ask to set out the flashcards in order of how they should be presented in the minutes themselves.

Alternatively, you could wait  few days and then download our session 😉  lol

I hope this has been helpful, good luck with the rest of the design/development!  🙂

    F.
