From a DfEE press release:
"The location of 32 City Learning Centres (CLCs ) - virtual schools for pupils and teachers - which will be operational from September 2000, was announced today by School Standards Minister Estelle Morris.
The centres which will form a national network across the Excellence in Cities areas, will each receive around £1.7 million in their first three years to provide technology based learning and teaching opportunities for inner city schools.
Speaking at a conference of head teachers in Birmingham, Ms Morris said:
"A key element of our Excellence in Cities programme is the establishment of a network of 85 City Learning Centres (CLCs) . These centres will be based in inner city schools and will provide state of the art ICT-based learning opportunities for pupils and teachers, and for the wider community.
"Once they are up and running the City Learning Centres will:
* act as pioneers for innovation and new approaches to teaching and learning;
* enhance learning by providing additional courses and opportunities for pupils and teachers which involve ICT based teaching and learning;
