Off-the-Shelf Training Packages and Toolkits

default-16x9

Hi - I am considering investing in some off-the-shelf training packages on behalf of a client - I'm thinking of the type of package/toolkit that includes trainer notes, downloadable material, DVD, etc. I haven't bought this type of material before and I am interested in members' experiences of using them.

1. What types of package have you used and how did you use them (and for what purpose)?
2. What did you think of the material? (quality; content; relevance; currency; etc.)
3. What was its impact for the learners and for the organisation as a whole?
4. Was it good value for money? Would you use something similar again in future?

Thanks. I'm not so interested in the subject matter, rather your experiences of using this type of material in general. I'm wary of recommending expenditure on resources without having a sense of how effective they might be!

  1. Things to consider
    Hi

    – Make sure there are no licence issues
    – Get a run down of the content and ask if the author will customise it for you at no or little charge
    – Obtain the download in word so you can make any amendments as they arise
    – Get ones with trainers guides in that include exercises that “lock in learning” and take into account VAK principles
    – Ask as many questions as possible of your supplier, if they have nothing to hide, they be happy to talk to you

    Hope this helps

  2. Depends who’s going to use them
    Hi Karene

If they are going to be used by a trainer with some experience then I think that they can be useful (taking Rich’s tips into account) although they are very generic and may not suit your client totally.

I think the problems can surface when they are for use for someone with little or no training experience. They can tend to follow the notes slavishly and don’t know where to go if things don’t go to plan or discussion veers off into unknown territory.
