Outsourcing E-learning

default-16x9

As a result of the small scale introduction of a successful e-learning training programme the organisation that I am dealing with would like to realise the benefits of e-learning more widely throughout the organisation. They are a distributed organisation with no central in-house HRD or e-learning capability and so they are considering servicing their e-learning requirements by outsourcing to an external company.

I have identified some of the pros and cons of this approach for this organisation’s specific context through a brief SWOT analysis but I am particularly concerned about how change management issues are addressed.

What in your experience either as receivers of e-learning services from external providers or as external providers of services to organisations are the major advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing e-learning provision? Have you any advice about how and who manages the change?

  1. Outsourcing
When we deal with clients who wants to outsource their whole training unit or their E-learning function the core is in the planning stage.

Planning the change as well as identifying people and job roles within the project is fundamental to the future success of the project.

The majority of experienced training providers in this area will have templated documents to capture this information and to raise the questions required from the start. The support levels needed for the client should be clear, and capable of being understood by all those involved in the training process.

Regular and frequent reviews in the early stages of the project will also assist a smooth transition.

A good provider will also want to spend time looking at historic data on training and discussions with managers and potential trainees to view the best way for training to be offered. There should be some flexibility within the system to fit the organisational needs.

    Happy to discuss this further.
