Payroll, tax and benefits training

default-16x9

I have a requirement to provide our junior Accounts department staff with some training around increasing their understanding of regular payroll issues so that they can respond to queries from staff.

This does not include how to operate our payroll system, but more background information including:

  • Employee rights, the regulations relating to SSP, SMP, SPP and how these are calculated
  • How HRMC work out an individual’s tax code and how payroll function calculates this
  • The regulations relating to employee benefits and how these are calculated on the P11D (e.g.  pension, healthcare, company cars)
  • What is a salary sacrifice scheme and how it works (e.g. childcare vouchers)
  • The regulations relating to bonuses and gifts and how PAYE and tax are calculated for these
  • How other deductions come about and how to account for them (e.g. court orders, student loans)

Any advice or suggestions for providers who could deliver these sort of topics in-house would be most welcome.

Thanks and regards,

Sophie

  1. Try ACAS

    Hi Sophie

You could contact ACAS – I know they offer a variety of courses on employment issues and would probably cover most of the topics you mention.

  2. double your money…..

    Hi Sophie

    Here is an idea that might give you extra added value;

Take the list of topics that you have and allocate one each (or allow people to pick) to a person in the department (or a pair of people)

Each person or pair is then tasked to research and become the in house SME on that topic

They then run bitesized learning sessions (or you can allow them to use alternative media) on their specialist topics

They are then tasked with keeping up to date with the changing subject and reporting regularly any updates to their colleagues.

This will give them all a sense of purpose and importance, it will give you an automatic update system, it will upskill your people in research and presentation, it will give you material for client newsletters (internal and external) and provide you with in house expertise.

    What do you think?

  3. Payroll and Statutory Payments Training

    Good afternoon Sophie.

HMRC run some free of charge courses on subjects such as Statutory Payments, OnLine Filing etc.  Locally to me courses are held in Norwich, most last for the morning only – some are all day.

I have attended their workshops and have found them very useful for practical "how to" training. I have pasted a link and phone number at the base of this posting.  If you follow the link you will then be able to drill down information specific to your region.

  4. Empowerment

    I really like Russ’s idea.

Colleges work in a very similar way by empowering certain individuals to keep up to date and cascading what they learn down to others.
